Shawn & Kate
Adoption is an incredible act of love and a gift to both parents and children! We have always wanted to be adoptive parents and appreciate even being considered to receive such a gift. To choose us to be your child's parents will make our dreams come true as we know we have so much love to give. We hope you consider us and we look forward to the adventure ahead.
Kate: Horses have always been a passion. Since childhood, Kate yearned to learn and spend all her time with them. She spent hours playing with model horses, devouring every horse book she could find, and galloping around the backyard pretending to be a horse (she still breaks into gallops).
In middle school, Kate found a local barn and begged her parents to work there. Every weekend she spent hours learning about feeding and caring for the horses. Horses taught Kate many things: independence, resilience, leadership, joy in caring for another, and that working hard for others is always worth it. She hopes to transfer these skills to motherhood and help our children find something that inspires joy and passion like horses do for her.
Shawn: Shawn's most significant passions are sports and travel. From infancy, he loved to play with a ball and watch sports. He loves the competition and camaraderie of sports which drove him to play football in college. Whether watching games with friends and family or playing recreational adult sports, Shawn has a passion for competition.
As a child, Shawn's family taught him the importance of travel to broaden perspectives. Travel allows you to see amazing places and learn and experience different cultures. He loves learning the history of places and seeing the world through different perspectives. Shawn has been blessed to travel his whole life and looks forward to providing this gift to a child.
Our Pets - Poe & Ralphie
As an animal lover, Kate spends a lot of her free time caring for our dog, Ralphie, and Kate's horse, Poe.
Ralphie is the sweetest companion. He loves to lay his head on our laps and is always ready to go for a walk or show off his many tricks for his favorite treat. Ralphie is so gentle and a great friend to kids. He doesn't like to swim but one of his favorite things to do is to run and dig in the sand when we go for beach walks.
Poe and Kate have been partnered for close to five years. Kate enjoys going on trail rides around the island with Poe and her friends, as well as building a relationship with him through training and lessons. It was a lifelong dream to own a horse and she hopes that we can encourage a child to find their own passion in life.
We believe that engaging with different cultures helps us to understand people, perspectives, and the world in which we live. It breaks down barriers and helps us to connect on a personal level. This is important for all, but is especially needed if our child is a different heritage than ourselves.
We have experienced this first-hand as our nieces and nephews are mixed race and we have seen how important it is to them to have a connection to their heritage. As a family, we look forward to learning and experiencing the child’s cultural ancestry, incorporating birth family traditions, and having friends with similar backgrounds. We are excited to embrace the child’s lineage and honor where they come from.
Our House and Neighborhood
Our home in Florida is in a wonderful community with children of all ages. Our neighbors are welcoming and we love celebrating Halloween in our community. We carve pumpkins and sit outside handing out candy while the children from all over the neighborhood walk by. Our across the street neighbors play spooky music and act like their characters for the trick-or-treaters. Our neighborhood also has a volleyball group that gets together regularly for sand volleyball games in our community center near the pool and playground.
When in Bermuda for work, we rent a small home that is in a quiet and lovely neighborhood overlooking the water. We love the gardens and green space around the house and enjoy taking the dog for walks in the neighborhood.
Our family vacation home in Virginia is right next door to Kate's parents and her cousins also regularly bring their families to the area in the summer. When the house isn't rented, we enjoy getting to spend lots of time there with our families. It is in the country so we mostly ride bikes or go for walks, play games (badminton is a particular favorite), and enjoy nights spent talking around the fire pit.
Our Extended Families
Kate's family has always spent weekends and summers in a small Virginia town on a river. Her extended family and cousins would get together to water ski, ride bikes, play games, and explore the woods.
We now spend Christmas there with both our families. When our nieces and nephews visit, we like to play badminton and basketball in the field nearby, roast marshmallows around our fire pit, play Family Feud and Life, and make (and eat) all sorts of yummy treats and dinner together.
Our favorite part of Christmas dinner is Kate's dad's famous stuffing (he makes it with sage sausage, so good!) and we love having Shawn's sister's specialty, peanut butter with Ritz crackers dipped in chocolate.
Our families are very excited for us to adopt a child. Our parents especially are excited for more grandchildren and our nieces and nephews cannot wait for their first cousins! Both families have already provided many books for us to read to this child and are eagerly awaiting the first time they can meet our new family member.
We look forward to seeing the love and adoration they will give this child along with all the wonderful memories we'll make together.
From Us to You
Caring for children and being parents has been our dream and we knew adoption would always be part of our journey. We have talked about adoption since before we married in 2014 and knew our family would never be complete without it. Since learning it would be the best way to grow our family, we have been excited and eager for the adventure. For us, adoption is more than just expanding our family; it is a way for our love to spill over to children and to share with them our joys, life, and family.
We have been together for over nine years and our relationship is built on love, trust and adventure! We enjoy expanding our horizons through travel, learning about history and cultures, and most of all, doing new activities that bring joy to each other. Our relationship can be summarized with our 2015 trip to Ireland and Scotland. Kate's top lifetime bucket list activity was to do a multi-day horseback riding trek of Kerry County in Ireland. Knowing this, Shawn, not an experienced horse rider, instigated the trip and even took riding lessons for several months in preparation. We spent five wonderful days riding between local inns in small towns through back country roads, trails and beaches. It was Kate's dream come true and Shawn loved the experience, but he most enjoyed the smile and happiness on Kate's face.
With a desire to take part in and fulfill one of Shawn's dreams, we attended The Open golf tournament at St. Andrews in Scotland. We loved taking walks along the shore of the small coastal town and Shawn was thrilled to explore the course while watching the best players in the world take on the elements of a cold and windy Scottish day. Kate at the time was not a golf enthusiast, but she was filled with joy to see Shawn encapsulated in the magic. Ironically, this trip was only a precursor of our lives as it laid the foundation for Shawn to help Kate own her first ever horse and for Kate to join Shawn in golfing.
We hope to give a child a life with family who enjoy learning, playing, traveling, and bringing joy to each other. While living in both Florida and Bermuda is unique, we know having established roots in different communities will provide countless benefits. We see it every day in many of the Bermuda families whose children have grown up surrounded by people from many places, cultures, and backgrounds. A child who grows up with us will have family and friends in many places who love them.
Thank you for taking the time to read about our family and to consider us as parents for your child. If we are blessed to parent them, know that you will forever be a part of our family. We are excited to embrace open adoption and are flexible to meet your needs. We look forward to sharing your child's growth and adventures via pictures and letters and know the importance of healthy communication between us all. You are and will forever be in our prayers and we hope to navigate this path together.
